About

What’s Local Perspectives on Tourism (LPT)?

Local Perspectives on Tourism (LPT) is an on-going interview project featuring host community perceptions on how tourism is affecting their towns, countries, cultures and lives.

LPT is an attempt to diversify the discussion on international travel with local perspectives.   To date, interviews have been conducted in Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Thailand and USA from December 2009 to September 2011.

Why LPT?

Today, the business volume of tourism equals or even surpasses that of oil exports, ‎food products or automobiles. Tourism has become one of the major players in ‎international commerce, and represents at the same time one of the main income ‎sources for many developing countries.1
– United Nations World Tourism Organization

Tourism is one of the biggest industries in the world but the current media attention on the topic is dominated by visitor perspectives on destinations and traveling or featuring services for tourists. For example, browse any travel website/blog or the Travel section of a bookstore and you’ll find mostly information, articles and books featuring visitor impressions of a country or culture.

With international travel becoming ever more pervasive, understanding host community view points on its impact is necessary for responsible and ethical tourism.

How are interviews conducted?

LPT is Little World Traveler’s personal project and interviews are conducted with local people and sometimes expatriates on her travels and updated periodically on this website.  Most of the interviews are informal and impromptu and the common questions asked are:

1) What do you think about tourism in your city/town/country?

2) What are some positive impacts of tourism in your city/town/country?

3) What are some negative impacts of tourism in your city/town/country?

All the interviews featured were conducted in English and the interviewees spoke English as a foreign language with varying proficiency levels. Because of this, there were limitations on the depth of a subject matter that could be explored. All interviews have been edited for grammar and clarity before being shared on the site.

To receive email updates when new interviews are featured, please join the LPT email list.
